One of the main card bouts at WSOF 10 is a five-round title fight between WSOF women’s strawweight Jessica “JAG” Aguilar and Emi “The Kamikaze Angel” Fujino. The current betting line for the fight at Several Bookmakers lists Aguilar as a -600 favorite (bet $600 to win $100) while Fujino is a +450 underdog (bet $100 to win $450). MMA oddsmaker Nick Kalikas originally opened up Aguilar at -600 and Fujino at +400, meaning there has been very marginal actin on Aguilar as the lines have tightened. There hasn’t been much action on “JAG” at the high line but it seems like most are picking her to win this fight and I agree. Here’s why. Aguilar (17-4) is the WSOF women’s strawweight champion. The 32-year-old Mexican trains out of American Top Team and is considered one of the top three 115lbers in the world today. She is currently riding an eight-fight win streak in MMA that includes wins over Megumi Fujii and Carla Esparza, amongst others. A talented grappler, Aguilar has secured eight of her career victories via submission, including an arm-triangle choke finish of Alida Gray in her WSOF debut. Her striking isn’t anything to write home about, but training at ATT it’s constantly improving and if she can use her striking to set up her takedowns she can win most fights against most 115ers. In my opinion, Aguilar should be in the UFC right now and this fight against Fujino should be the next step towards her reaching that goal. Fujino (13-7) is a talented female strawweight fighting out of Japan. The 33 year old actually lost her last outing against Mizuki Inoue but for whatever reason WSOF brought her into their organization and is giving her an immediate title shot. It must be because the women’s 115lb division is so shallow in WSOF, but still, she doesn’t seem like she deserves to fight for a title. As far as her skills go, Fujino is fairly well-rounded with some kickboxing as well as some grappling prowess. However, she has a poor record in MMA and is coming into this fight against Aguilar having lost three of her last seven fights. Against Aguilar, Fujino will likely look to keep the fight on the feet and hurt her opponent standing, but going up against a fighter with the grappling ability of Aguilar, that’s easier said than done and no wonder she enters this fight as a big underdog. I believe Aguilar should be able to use her wrestling to grind out a decision victory here to retain her belt, or she might even get a submission victory since she has 25 minutes of fight time to get it. The -600 line on Aguilar may seem steep but she should definitely win this fight and I can’t blame anyone who throws her in a parlay. As for the total, it’s a tough one to call but if anything there could be some value on UNDER 4.5 rounds at +160. But I would probably pass on the total since the fight could very well go the distance.
