The mixed martial arts (MMA) fantasy website Kountermove is back with another freeroll for MMAOddsBreaker.com readers. If you’re not familiar with how the site works, here’s a brief snippet from the site owners, themselves.
Kountermove brings the traditional fantasy format to MMA. Accumulation of points and a salary cap make fantasy MMA more intriguing than your basic “pick ’em” contest. With other industry pros on the site it is the place to be if you know your MMA. The game is fairly simple on its face, games are played over a single night during one event. Prior to the event, players get a total of $25,000 fantasy dollars to pick five fighters for your team. Each fighter is given a specific salary by Kountermove. Kountermove assigns a value for each fighter based on how we believe the fight will go. Points are scored if a fighter scores a finish, wins a round, lands significant strikes, knocks an opponent down, scores takedowns, secures dominant positions or attempts submissions. The more dominant your fighters’performance, the more points you’re going to score. If you score more points than your opponents, then you win the money.

If you’re interested in a few pointers on potential fighters to pick, I’ll be offering my analysis and potential picks to click. In case you have your doubts, I have a very nice track record of success with the website, having won plenty since its inception. Before I get to my picks, remember that to get the best value out of your team, you have to try to get an average of $5000 per fighter with your team of five fighters and your $25,000 salary cap. That means if you want to pick a big favorite from UFC on Fox 10 like Benson Henderson ($5900), you have to balance it out by picking some underdogs that you think will perform above and beyond. Sometimes it’s not worth it to pick the overwhelming favorite. Without further ado, here are some of the picks that stand out for me: Eddie Wineland ($5400): Wineland comes at a price, but he’s one of the most powerful bantamweights on the entire roster and is coming off a title shot against Renan Barao. Still just 29 years old, the first ever WEC bantamweight champion has a lot to prove and in my opinion, is just starting to enter his athletic prime as a mixed martial artist. Wineland is facing Yves Jabouin, a dynamic striker who seems to be on a steep decline and was recently in a very close split decision contest against Dustin Pague. Before that, Jabouin was on the receiving end of Brad Pickett’s lone knockout in his four-year Zuffa stint, so he’s definitely primed for another knockout loss should Wineland’s heavy hands connect. Wineland has other-worldly power and was the first man to stop Scott Jorgensen with strikes, so he should have no problem putting away the 34-year old Jabouin should he land his heavy counter shots. Underdog Pick of the Night Mike Rhodes ($4800): Rhodes is making his UFC debut, and Kountermove has a history of undervaluing fighters they haven’t seen in action before. “Biggie” is a heavy hitter with a terrific athletic and striking background training out of Milwaukee’s reputed Roufusport gym, which is only a hop, skip and a jump away from Chicago. He’s practically fighting in his backyard against fellow UFC debuter George Sullivan, a fighter who also likes to keep the fight standing. The biggest difference here is not only that Rhodes is the quicker overall fighter who’s lighter on his feet, he also has slightly more power standing and is 8 years younger than Sullivan. This is a recipe for a very big night for Rhodes, whether he scores a finish or not, you’re getting him at terrific value here. Fighter to Avoid Donald Cerrone ($5400): Cerrone may be expected to win against Adriano Martins, but at $5400, I’m not sure he’s worth the risk. “Cowboy” is one of the most frustrating fighters to root for on the entire UFC roster. Sometimes he shows up and puts on an immaculate performance like his bouts against Charles Oliveira, Dennis Siver, Jeremy Stephens or most recently Evan Dunham, but other times he’s just a human punching bag like in his bouts against Nate Diaz, Anthony Pettis or Rafael dos Anjos. In those last two bouts, he was facing a lefty in dos Anjos as well as a fighter who switched to the southpaw stance in “Showtime” so it’s pretty evident that Cerrone has issues dealing with an unorthodox stance. Martins is also left-handed and while I’m not wholly convinced Martins will win, I do think it’s important to caution anyone who’s going all in on Cerrone this time around.
