A UFC on FOX 9 flyweight matchup that is very intriguing is the bout between Scott “Young Gunz” Jorgensen and Zach “Fun Size” Makovsky. The current betting line for this fights at Several Bookmakers sees Jorgensen as a -265 betting favorite (bet $265 to win $100) and Makovsky a +225 dog (bet $100 to win $225). MMA oddsmaker Nick Kalikas opened up Jorgensen as a -185 favorite and Makovsky as a +145 dog, meaning so far the early public money has come in on “Young Gunz.” I agree with the early line movement as I am also picking Jorgensen to pick up the W. Here’s why. Jorgensen (14-7) was one of the top bantamweights in the UFC but is making the move down to 125 pounds for the first time in his career. The 31-year-old is a very strong wrestler with knockout power and submission ability. In the UFC, Jorgensen has a 3-3 record with wins over John Albert, Ken Stone, and and Jeff Curran, but his losses have come only to the cream of the crop of the bantamweight division: Eddie Wineland, Urijah Faber, and interim champion Renan Barao. So I would say that his record is a bit misleading. Overall I really think Jorgensen is one of the studs of the lighter weight classes and I’m really looking forward to him taking his power wrestling game down to the UFC flyweight division against the newcomer, Makovsky. Makovsky (16-4) is making his UFC debut just a few weeks after winning the RFA flyweight title. The 31-year-old is the former Bellator bantamweight champion but after back-to-back losses in Bellator he was released from the promotion. I felt like Bellator gave up on Makovsky far too soon but it seems to have worked out for the best for him as he has a great opportunity to make a title run in the UFC. Like Jorgensen, Makovsky is a solid wrestler with decent submissions, but we have seen him controlled by lesser-skilled fighters such as Anthony Leone in the past just because they are bigger. I like Makovsky and I believe he will win some fights in the UFC, but I think this is a bad matchup for him in his debut and I think he’s going to come up short. Although Makovsky is a talented fighter, I really don’t like the fact he took this fight on such short notice after going five rounds in RFA so recently. On top of that, I believe Jorgensen is a bit better in all facets of the game, and thus I see him getting the job done, either by submission or decision. At -265, Jorgensen is higher than where I had capped him at (-200), so I don’t see much value at the moment. However, if the line dips below 2-to-1 and gets back near the -185 opener, I will likely be looking to make a play on Jorgensen, likely in a two-team parlay. I will also be looking at the Jorgensen wins via submission prop, as I believe that is his method of victory in this particular fight.
