Here are my initial thoughts on the Opening Odds for Cage Warriors 121:

  • The Cage Warriors lightweight title is on the line as champion Agy Sandari (13-2) takes on Donovan Desmae (14-5). The 27-year-old Sandari is a Dutch fighter who is riding a high right now, having won his last seven fights in a row. In his last fight at Cage Warriors 119, Sandari defeated Jack Grant to win the vacant Cage Warriors lightweight title. Sandari was supposed to fight Ben Lakhdhar, but his opponent withdrew with an injury and Desmae replaced him on short notice. Desmae is a Belgium-based fighter who was given this title shot against Sandari on short notice. Considering he’s stepping up on less than two weeks’ notice, you have to give him a lot of credit. A professional MMA fighter since 2012, Desmae has won his last two fights, including a submission win over Tim Barrett in September 2019. Desmae missed all of 2020 but he returns here against Sandari with the belt on the line. The oddsmakers opened up the champion Sandari as the favorite here, though Desmae has the tools to pull off the upset.
  • The co-main event features Cage Warriors bantamweight champion Jack Cartwright (9-0) taking on Sylwester Miller (9-3). The 26-year-old Cartwright turned pro in 2017 and he has looked exceptional since then, winning all nine of his professional MMA fights, including eight of those victories by stoppage. Cartwright won the title last March when he defeated Manuel Bilic by a unanimous decision to win the vacant title, then submitted Gerardo Fanny via arm-triangle choke last September to defend his belt. He looks like a fantastic prospect and could be UFC bound with another win or two. In this fight, Cartwright takes on Miller, who is making his Cage Warriors debut on the heels of two wins in his native Poland. The bookies opened up Cartwright as the clear favorite here, and given his undefeated record, it makes sense.
  • Another fight on the card sees middleweight James Webb (8-2-1) take on Matthew Bonner (8-6-1). The 31-year-old Webb has won his last two fights, including a submission win over former UFC fighter Craig White in his last outing this past September. Webb has plenty of experience fighting in CWFC and has looked very sharp overall in the promotion. In this fight, he takes on Bonner, who is also riding a two-fight win streak heading into this bout. The 30-year-old Bonner also has quite a bit of experience in CWFC and has fared well overall, though he’s dropped six fights by decision. Bonner is a better fighter than his record indicates but given Webb has had more success, the oddsmakers opened him up as the favorite in this one.
