And here are my initial thoughts on the UFC 6 Opening Odds:
- The main event is certainly a very intriguing light heavyweight bout between Reyes and Weidman. Reyes is quickly emerging as one of the best 205lbers in the sport and is probably only one or two wins away from a date against Jon Jones. He’s looked exceptional, and deserves this chance to headline his first UFC card. As for Weidman, he’s making his way up to light heavyweight for the first time in his UFC career. The former middleweight champ has lost four of his last five fights, all by knockout, so he had to make a change, but moving up in weight might not be the best thing for him. Look what happened to Luke Rockhold when he moved up in weight. The same thing could happen here to Weidman. It should be interesting either way.
- I’m glad the UFC way able to quickly re-book the Rodriguez vs. Stephens fight after the No Contest last month in Mexico City. We were completely robbed of a fight the last time around, so it’s good these two will be able to settle the score quickly. Check out my previous breakdown of that card here. Even with the fight taking place in the US, my breakdown of the matchup hasn’t changed.
- Hardy is back and he takes on Sosoli in what looks like another mismatch. It’s time the UFC gives Hardy a top-15 opponent because when he takes on lesser fighters like Sosoli he’s going to finish them rather easily.
- I feel like the UFC matchmakers have given Lauzon a really tough fight here against Pearce. Lauzon is a local Boston guy and obviously was going to fight on this card, but it sure seems like a bad fight for him on paper. Pearce is younger, coming off of a string of wins, and is much more durable than Lauzon at this point of his career. Even though Lauzon is by far the more experienced fighter, Pearce is the clear favorite here.
- The other fight I’m really interested in is a women’s flyweight bout between Barber and Robertson. These are two of the youngest rising stars at 125lbs and the winner of this fight should get a top-10 opponent. It’s surprising the UFC matched up two youngsters on win streaks like this, but only one can get their hand raised. I favor Barber to get the job done, but it’s definitely going to be a competitive fight.
