Ultimate Fighting Championship announced today that December’s UFC 231 event will feature a women’s flyweight title co-main event between top contender Valentina Shevchenko and former strawweight champion Joanna Jedrzejczyk.
MMA oddsmaker Nick Kalikas’ betting line for the upcoming bout was released via ESPN earlier today.
Here’s what Kalikas had to say about the contest:
“The UFC turned heads with an initial announcement of Valentina Shevchenko versus Sijara Eubanks for the vacant UFC flyweight title, which wasn’t well received due to the lack of name recognition for Eubanks. Now, the promotion has righted a wrong by matching Shevchenko against the former dominant UFC women’s strawweight champion Joanna Jedrzejczyk. Shevchenko and Jedrzejczyk are two of the most highly skilled and popular female fighters on the roster and both come from highly decorated striking backgrounds, even having competed in three separate kickboxing matches against each other, where Shevchenko was victorious each time. Jedrzejcyk didn’t hesitate to move up a weight class and take this match-up, but stylistically, this is a difficult fight for her. Shevchenko can at least match Jedrzejczyk in the stand-up and should hold a significant edge if the fight hits the canvas due to superior takedowns, grappling and ground striking. While Jedrzejczyk can only win this fight standing, Shevchenko could theoretically finish this fight on the feet or on the ground. Both women should draw a decent amount of action at the betting window. With Jedrzejczyk being a heavy +230 underdog, I expect her to garner a lot of public action, whereas Shevchenko should draw action from sharper betters who won’t hesitate to play a steep price on the Russian.”
