Not a ton of news on the fight annoucement front as of late, but there was another fight added to the upcoming UFC China card that’s worth mentioning, and I’ll give my thoughts on it in today’s MMA odds and ends.
Jessica Aguilar vs. Weili Zhang, UFC Fight Night 141
A women’s strawweight bout between Jessica Aguilar and Weili Zhang has been added to UFC Fight Night 141, which is set to take place Sunday, November 25 at Cadillac Arena in Beijing, China. The bout was reported by Raphael Marinho of Combate. Aguilar (20-6) is just 1-2 in the UFC but she is coming off of her first win in the Octagon, a unanimous decision defeat over Jodie Esquibel back in July. Prior to that, Aguilar had lost back-to-back decisions to Claudia Gadelha and Cortney Casey after entering the UFC on a 10-fight win streak. She is a far ways away from being the former WSOF champion and a contender in Bellator, but at age 36, Aguilar remains a solid gatekeeper at 115lbs.
Zhang (17-1) is one of the most impressive fighters from China and one of the best female fighters from Asia in MMA right now. She picked up a decision win over Danielle Taylor in her UFC debut back in August and overall she has won 17-straight fights since losing her MMA debut back in 2013. At 29, she looks like she could be a title contender at 115lbs within the next fw years. That being said, her level of competition hasn’t been anywhere near Aguilar’s, and this is likely to be the toughest fight of her career to date. Aguilar hasn’t performed very well in the UFC but I still have a lot of respect for her as a fighter. I’d still peg Zhang as the favorite here, but I think it’s going to be a competitive fight that goes to a decision.
