The Premier Boxing Champions are bringing boxing back to Long Island’s venerable Nassau Coliseum as they present a major card that will see the headline fights air on FOX. The main event has former two-division world champion Robert Guerrero (33-5-1) returning to face fast rising Omar Figueroa Jr. (26-0-1) in a welterweight 10-round bout.
It is hard to say this is a step-up fight for Figueroa, who holds wins over the likes of Antonio DeMarco and Ricky Burns, but Guerrero is a tough opponent for him on this stage. Guerrero is 2-4 in his last six fights dating back to his matchup with Floyd Mayweather Jr., and he needs to win this fight to remain relevant. Guerrero counts losses to Keith Thurman and Danny Garcia in his recent stretch of fights, so he has been fighting top guys while they are in their prime. Here Guerrero finds himself cast in the gatekeeper role again as Figueroa will have a case for a title shot with a win on Saturday.
Undefeated light heavyweights will also clash, as native New Yorkers Sean Monaghan (28-0) and Marcus Browne (19-0) meet in the event’s co-feature. Monaghan is from Long Island and therefore the hometown favorite, but he will enter the match with Staten Island’s Browne as an underdog.
Browne was America’s light heavyweight representative at the 2012 Olympics, where he bowed out after just one match. Like most of the 2012 U.S. Olympic team, Browne is in search of respect as a professional. He has remained undefeated and has already notched the WBC’s United States title, so this chance to shine on television is one that Browne wants to take advantage of. At the end of the day, Monaghan has a reputation as a local ticket seller and draw in the New York City area, and Browne is his most decorated opponent to date.
In addition, Poland vs. Poland is the theme for the featured heavyweight bout, as Artur Szpilka (20-2) returns to face undefeated Adam Kownacki (15-0). We last saw Szpilka fight 18 months ago when he was stopped by Deontay Wilder in the ninth round of a failed bid to win the WBC world heavyweight title. Szpilka was carried out of the ring on a stretcher in that meeting with Wilder, but he is expected to be back at 100 percent after the time off. Meanwhile, Kownacki fought on the undercard of Szpilka vs. Wilder, and he is based out of Brooklyn, so he figures to have the crowd behind him as well.
