The Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) was back in Las Vegas, NV this past Saturday night (July 8, 2017) with UFC 213: Romero vs. Whittaker. It was an exciting night of scraps that saw five of 11 bouts end inside the distance. and with the action now in our rear view, let’s take a look at which of the evening’s competitors we may no longer see going to work inside the Octagon…
ON THE CHOPPING BLOCK
Daniel Omielanczuk
After building a three-fight winning streak with victories over the likes of Chris De La Rocha, Jarjis Danho and Alexei Oliynyk, Omielanczuk has gone on to lose his next three bouts, including a second-round D’Arche choke submission against Stefan Struve and a pair of decisions to Timothy Johnson and most recently Curtis Blaydes. Following this skid, I think there is a decent chance that the promotion opts to part ways with this heavyweight, but I would say it is 70/30 that he gets one more shot because the division is razor-thin, and he would be useful on their card in Poland this October.
Travis Browne
A year-and-a-half ago, Browne defeated Matt Mitrione via third-round TKO. But since then, he has dropped four straight fights. A first-round TKO at the hands of former heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez at UFC 200 started the losing streak, followed by a unanimous decision setback against Fabricio Werdum and a second-round knockout by Derrick Lewis. At UFC 213, he suffered a second-round rear-naked choke submission versus Alexei Olynyk. When asked about Browne’s future, UFC president Dana White commented that he thinks “Hapa” should retire, and I agree that the Hawaiian is most likely done in the organization as well.
Brian Camozzi
Camozzi made his promotional debut against Randy Brown last December and lost by second-round TKO. In his second attempt at a first UFC win, he took on TUF: Nations winner Chad Laprise at UFC 213 and lost by third-round TKO. After dropping back-to-back fights by TKO, I think there is a fair chance that Camozzi meets his recently released brother Chris in the unemployment line.
