Undefeated lightweight Justin Gaethje slated to sign with the UFC

According to WSOF President Ray Sefo (now Professional Fighters League President), lightweight champion Justin Gaethje is heading to the UFC.

Gaethje (17-0) won the WSOF lightweight belt in 2014, earning a first-round knockout over Richard Patishnock in January 2014. The 28-year-old defended his title five times, with notable wins over Melvin Guillard, Luis Palomino (twice) and UFC vet Brian Foster. UFC 216 scheduled for September 19th in Edmonton, Canada

UFC announced Thursday in a press release that the promotion will head to Edmonton, Alberta, Canada for the first time, as UFC 216 will take place at Rogers Place. No fights were annouced for the event in the release. Here is what Senior Vice President, Head of International and Content Joe Carr had to say:

“We are thrilled to hold our first Pay-Per-View event in Edmonton. Fans have long been asking us to bring the Octagon back to Alberta, and we can’t wait to deliver a blockbuster event at state-of-the-art Rogers Place this September.”

This will not be the first time a Zuffa-owned promotion will hold an event in Edmonton though. WEC 49: Varner vs Shalorus took place in June 2010, with notable fighters such as Renan Barão, Raphael Assunção and Erik Koch competing on that card.

Rogers Place opened in 2016 and is home to the NHL’s Edmonton Oilers. The main card will air on PPV after the prelims on FS1 and UFC Fight Pass.
