Despite his strong desire to return to welterweight, former TUF champion Kelvin Gastelum (13-2) will continue his run at middleweight when he takes on Brazilian legend Vitor Belfort (25-13) in his home country at UFC Fight Night 106 this Saturday (March 11, 2017) in Fortaleza, Brazil. Gastelum versus Belfort is the headliner on a 12-bout card featuring mostly Brazilian fighters, with the preliminary and main cards both televised live on FOX Sports 1 starting at 8 p.m. (ET). Gastelum previously opened as a -315 favorite (bet $315 to win $100) and is coming off a third-round TKO of Tim Kennedy at UFC 206 last December 10, sending his opponent off into retirement on a losing note. The 25-year-old has battled weight-cutting issues throughout his brief UFC career, as he has bounced between 170 pounds and 185 and missed his target twice, resulting in two catchweight bouts that he ended up splitting. One of those came against current welterweight champ Tyron Woodley, a split-decision loss at UFC 183. Meanwhile, Belfort opened as a +235 underdog (bet $100 to win $235) and may be quickly nearing retirement, as he could very well hang up his gloves with a third consecutive loss to Gastelum here. The 39-year-old will be 40 on April 1st (no joke) and also has some demons he has tried to conquer recently in the form of past steroid use and elevated levels of testosterone. Without the use of banned substances, he has become a shell of his former self, suffering early TKO losses in three of his past four fights over the previous two years. The co-main event is a light heavyweight matchup between two fighters at opposite ends of their respective careers as well. Brazilian Mauricio “Shogun” Rua (24-10) will take on Gian Villante (15-7), with each of them trying to stay on the winning track. The 35-year-old Rua has won two in a row after dropping four of five, which essentially ended his run as a top contender at 205. Villante has still never gotten to that point and hopes to crack the UFC’s Top 10 rankings with another win. The third major bout on the card that has also seen a betting line already released in addition to the main event is a lightweight showdown between Brazilian Edson Barboza (18-4) and Beneil Dariush (14-2). Each 155-pounder has won his last two fights and is currently ranked in the Top 10. Barboza opened as a -180 fave with Dariush listed as a +140 dog. In addition, an originally scheduled bout between featherweights Godofredo Pepey and Kyle Bochniak was scratched due to injury as confirmed Monday on MMAOddsBreaker.com. MMA oddsmaker Nick Kalikas opened the betting odds for the remaining UFC Fight Night 106 bouts today at Several Bookmakers.
