Bellator returned on Saturday night (February 18, 2017) with its 172nd event, taking place in San Jose, CA. The event featured a headlining lightweight bout between Josh Thomson and Patricky Freire, which was bumped up from co-main event on the day of the fight due to Matt Mitrione falling ill and forcing the initial main event of Mitrione vs. Fedor Emelianenko to be scratched. Bellator 172 Favorites Who Won In the co-main event of the evening, Cheick Kongo completely dominated and grinded out former teammate Oli Thompson for three rounds to pick up a one-sided unanimous decision victory on the judges’ scorecards. Kongo came through as a -310 ($310 to win $100) betting favorite while Thompson failed to cash as a +255 ($100 to win $255) underdog. Bellator 172 Underdogs Who Won In the main event, Patricky “Pitbull” Freire knocked Strikeforce and UFC veteran Josh “The Punk” Thomson out at the start of the second round of action. He dropped Thomson in the first round but failed to capitalize with a finish, but the Brazilian got the job done in the second and has now won three of his last four bouts, with the lone defeat coming to current Bellator lightweight champion Michael Chandler. Freire cashed big as a +180 betting underdog while Thomson flopped as a -220 favorite. On the main card, unknown journeyman Mauricio Alonso also defeated former UFC welterweight title challenger Josh Koscheck via first-round TKO. Koscheck looked the worst he has ever looked inside of the cage and clearly beat himself in this contest, as it was a fight he never got his foot in. He held his eye after eating an uppercut that did not land on his eye, and then some punches later, the referee had seen enough. Alonso pulled through as a +260 underdog while Koscheck bit the dust as a big -320 betting favorite.
