MMA Odds and Ends for Friday: Nurmagomedov Misses Weight

Khabib Nurmagomedov The UFC 160 weigh-ins today took place in Las Vegas, NV, and, with former heavyweight boxing champ Mike Tyson flanking UFC president Dana White on stage, 23 of the 24 fighters on the card make weight. The lone exception was lightweight fighter Khabib Nurmagomedov, who weighed in 156.5 pounds for his preliminary bout against Abel Trujilo. The two engaged in one of the most heated staredowns of any pair of fighters on the card and Nurmagomedov — who was fined 20 percent of his purse for missing weight — ended up shoving Trujilo after he refused to shake his hand. According to UFC PR, Trujilo will receive 10 percent of Nurmagomedov’s purse, while the overseeing Nevada State Athletic Commission will receive the other 10 percent. Here are the complete weigh-in results for all UFC 160 fighters (in pounds): Cain Velasquez (240) vs. Antonio Silva (263) Junior dos Santos (239) vs. Mark Hunt (264) Glover Teixeira (205) vs. James Te Huna (205) Gray Maynard (156) vs. TJ Grant (155) Donald Cerrone (155) vs. KJ Noons (156) Rick Story (169) vs. Mike Pyle (170) Dennis Bermudez (146) vs. Max Holloway (145) Colton Smith (170) vs. Robert Whittaker (171) Khabib Nurmagomedov (158.5) vs. Abel Trujilo (155) Stephen Thompson (170) vs. Nah-Shon Burrell (171) Brian Bowles (135) vs. George Roop (135) Jeremy Stephens (146) vs. Estevan Payan (145) Here’s a few observations from the weigh ins:

  • TJ Grant looked to be a bit bigger than Gray Maynard and if that’s the case once they rehydrate then maybe Maynard is going to have a tougher time of taking Grant down to the mat than some believe.. There are a lot of sharp bettors that are taking a stab at the Grant moneyline of +170 and I don’t blame them, as I feel as though he’ll win the fight and earn his lightweight title shot.
  • Donald Cerrone and KJ Noons both looked to be in great spirits and both guys look like they have a lot of respect for one another. At the pre-fight press conference Noons and Cerrone said to each other they want to win “Fight of the Night” and if this fight does indeed stay standing then look for Noons to remain highly competitive as he has excellent boxing and if Cerrone has one weakness it’s that part of his game. At +255, Noons is worth a shot as a dog.
  • Nah-Shon Burrell missed weight on his first attempt fr his bout with Stephen Thompson, coming in at 172 pounds and getting a stern talking to from Dana White as it’s his second-straight UFC fight in which he missed weight. However, he did end up making the 171-pound maximum welterweight limit in a non-title fight and so he’s at less of a risk of getting cut with a loss, as missing weight for two-straight fights is a death sentence unless you win.
  • Jeremy Stephens looked okay at his first 145-pound pound weigh-in, but he’s way overpriced at -220 and don’t be surprised if his opponent, underdog Estevan Payan (+180), pulls off the upset.

Good luck to everyone betting on UFC 160. The card is absolutely stacked top to bottom so hopefully we can all make some cash betting on these great fights and even if we lose, hopefully we can still enjoy what should be an exciting event.
