World Series of Fighting 33 took place last night/this morning (Friday, October 7, 2016) at the Kansas City Municipal Auditorium in Kansas City, Missouri, and it featured some entertaining fights despite losing the main event at the last minute. Overall from a betting perspective, three betting favorites won while two underdogs were victorious based on the closing odds at Several Bookmakers. Here’s a quick recap for each fight. WSOF 33 Favorites That Won In the main event of the evening, WSOF middleweight and light heavyweight champion Dave Branch continued his run of dominance by outworking an overmatched Vinny Magalhaes over the course of five rounds. Branch hurt Magalhaes early on the feet and that set the tone for the bout as he refused to pay into Magalhaes’ world class Brazilian jiu-jitsu game on the ground, instead beating the Brazilian up on the feet and holding on to win a one-sided unanimous decision victory. Branch came through as a -290 favorite (bet $290 to win $100) while Magalhaes lost at +260 (bet $100 to win $260). In a welterweight battle, John Howard had no answer for Abubakar Magomedov. Howard was taken down repeatedly and beat up over the course of three rounds, claiming post-fight that he suffered a shoulder injury. There wasn’t much drama about the decision as Magomedov cruised to a unanimous nod from the judges. Magomedov was victorious as a -400 favorite, while Howard was defeated as a +355 underdog. In the opening bout of the main card, Shawn Jordan put a hurting on Ashley Gooch in a heavyweight battle. Jordan won the early striking exchanges, then scored a takedown where he proceeded to pound away from top position, eventually taking Gooch’s back and ending the fight near the end of the first frame due to unanswered blows. Jordan came through as a -290 favorite while Gooch was +260. WSOF 33 Underdogs That Won In a lightweight fight, Luiz Firmino scored a quick takedown of Brian Foster, but got himself in serious trouble after Foster locked in a triangle/armbar combination which forced a tap just past the midway point of the first round. Firmino acted like he never tapped out but the replay clearly showed he did. Foster pulled off the upset as a +125 underdog while Firmino was a -135 favorite. In a 160 lb catchweight battle, Joao Zeferino put on the performance of a lifetime against Jason High, rocking High on the feet in the first round, then securing top position with takeodowns in the second before scoring a TKO in the opening moments of the third round. It was a complete performance from Zeferino and should garner him a title shot. Zeferino came through as a +177 underdog while High was -192.
