UFC returned for a free cable event on Fox Sports 1 last night (Saturday, October 1, 2016). The card was headlined by a bantamweight bout between John Dodson and John Lineker. All in all, six favorites won, while six upsets occurred. Here’s how everything played out based on the Several Bookmakers closing odds: Favorites That Won In a light heavyweight scrap, Luis Henrique da Silva did serious damage to Joachim Christensen in the clinch to win the first round. Christensen dropped him in the second but da Silva fired back with a late arm bar to score a submission stoppage. Da Silva was a -115 (Bet $115 to win $100) favorite while Christensen was +105. In a heavyweight contest, Shamil Abdurikhimov utilized superior grappling and pace to win a split decision against Walt Harris. Harris landed a huge punch in the second round but couldn’t get the finish. Abdurikhimov was victorious as a -135 favorite while Harris was +125. In a light heavyweight bout, Ion Cutelaba pushed an intense pace against Jonathan Wilson over three rounds and Wilson couldn’t keep up. Cutelaba was victorious as a -115 favorite while Wilson lost at +105. In a heavyweight fight, Curtis Blades survived an early scare against Cody East to score a second round TKO via elbows on the ground. Blaydes won as a -225 favorite while East was +205. Underdogs That Won In the main event of the evening, John Dodson and John Lineker had an extremely competitive bout where Dodson circled on the outside while Lineker stalked forward looking to knock his block off. Both men had their moments but Lineker walked away with a split decision victory. Lineker was a slight +110 (Bet $100 to win $110) underdog while Dodson was -120. In a “lightweight” bout, Alex Oliveira missed weight by six pounds, but he did damage in the clinch against Will Brooks, causing a rib injury. Brooks faded in the third round and Oliveira landed unanswered ground and pound to earn an upset TKO victory. Oliveira was a +275 underdog while Brooks lost as a -305 favorite. In another big upset, welterweights Josh Burkman and Zak Ottow threw down but it was Ottow who walked away with a surprise decision. Burkman landed good shots and a takedown but the judges sided with Ottow. Ottow was a hefty +230 underdog while Burkman lost despite being a +250 favorite. In a flyweight fight, Brandon Moreno pulled off a shocker as an injury replacement in his fight against number nine-ranked Louis Skills. Moreno scored an early takedown then hopped on a guillotine choke which forced the heavily favored Smolka to tap. Moreno was a +450 dog while Smolka was a -525 favorite. In a featherweight scrap, Andre Fili out struck Hacran Dias and was able to reverse multiple takedowns en route to winning a unanimous decision. Fili was +135 while Dias was a favorite at -145. In a welterweight fight, Elizeu Zaleski dos Santos was able to put strike Keita Nakamura en route to winning a semi controversial decision. Nakamura had success with takedowns and grappling but the judges didn’t reward him. Zaleski won as a +110 underdog while Nakamura was -120. In a middleweight bout, Nate Marquardt hung tough against Tamden McCrory, eventually hurting McCrory badly and then finishing him off with a head kick. Marquardt won as a +145 underdog while McCrory was -155. In the opening bout of the evening, Ketlen Vieira was able to secure top position against Kelly Faszholz en route to winning the first two rounds. Faszholz won the third with her striking but it was too late as Vieira won a decision. Vieira was a +100 underdog while Faszholz was a -110 betting favorite. Pick ’em Fights In the opening bout of the main card, featherweight Godofredo Pepey rocked Mike De La Torre early on the feet then was able to sink in a rear naked choke to pull off a first round submission victory. Both fighters closed at pick’em -105 odds.
