Post-UFC on FOX 14: On the Chopping Block

corassaniUFC on FOX 14 came and went, and the insane Swedish night produced an entirety of 12 bouts, with seven of them ending inside the distance. All three Swedish fighters competing on the card suffered defeats, and a number of underdogs found themselves victorious. Now with the wild night of fights behind us, let’s take a look at which of the evening’s competitors we may no longer see inside the Octagon… ON THE CHOPPING BLOCK: Akira Corassani The Swede made his UFC debut against Andy Ogle, winning the bout via controversial split decision, and then went on to score a big upset over Robbie Peralta in his next outing. He was a very big underdog heading into the match-up and ended up winning via unanimous 30-27 scores across the board. In his next fight, he faced Maximo Blanco and won the fight via DQ due to an illegal knee thrown by Blanco. He broke his nose in that fight, and in his next fight he found himself again as a big underdog when he took on Dustin Poirier, and was getting the better of Poirier until Poirier again broke his nose, causing him to mentally break and give Poirier an easy TKO victory. A first round knockout at the hands of Max Holloway was what followed, and then at this past Saturday night’s UFC on FOX 14 in Sweden, he suffered a first round knockout at the hands of Sam Sicilia in what was very likely a “loser goes home” match-up. The Swede is now on a three fight skid, with all losses coming by way of T/KO. I would not be surprised to see him get one last chance, but more than likely, I think we have seen the last of Corassani inside the Octagon. Andy Ogle After losing a controversial split decision to Akira Corassani in his promotional debut, Ogle bounced back into the win column with a unanimous decision victory over former number one contender Josh Grispi. The Brit’s luck ended there, as he went on to lose a third round submission to Charles Oliveira and a pair of decisions to Cole Miller and Maximo Blanco, respectively. Despite being on a three fight skid, he received another shot at this past Saturday night’s UFC on FOX 14 in Sweden, where he took on promotional newcomer and was knocked out at only 0:08 seconds into the fight. Ogle was quick to protest the stoppage, but it was too little too late for “The Little Axe”. Now on a four fight losing streak, I think it is likely he will be receiving his walking papers from the promotion. That said, I believe he will be able to put together a couple of wins on the regional circuit and earn another shot inside the Octagon, likely on a future card in England.
