Kountermove brings the traditional fantasy format to MMA. Accumulation of points and a salary cap make fantasy MMA more intriguing than your basic “pick ’em” contest. With other industry pros on the site it is the place to be if you know your MMA. The game is fairly simple on its face, games are played over a single night during one event. Prior to the event, players get a total of $25,000 fantasy dollars to pick five fighters for your team. Each fighter is given a specific salary by Kountermove. Kountermove assigns a value for each fighter based on how we believe the fight will go. Points are scored if a fighter scores a finish, wins a round, lands significant strikes, knocks an opponent down, scores takedowns, secures dominant positions or attempts submissions. The more dominant your fighters’performance, the more points you’re going to score. If you score more points than your opponents, then you win the money.

If you’re interested in a few pointers on potential fighters to pick, I’ll be offering my analysis and potential picks to click. In case you have your doubts, I have a very nice track record of success with the website, having won plenty since its inception. Before I get to my picks, remember that to get the best value out of your team, you have to try to get an average of $5000 per fighter with your team of five fighters and your $25,000 salary cap. That means if you want to pick a big favorite from UFC 187 like Uriah Hall ($5500) you have to balance it out by picking some underdogs that you think will perform above and beyond. Sometimes it’s not worth it to pick the overwhelming favorite. Without further ado, here are some of the picks that stand out for me: Travis Browne ($5200): In retrospect, Andrei Arlovski’s big UFC resurgence isn’t as impressive as it seems. He won a controversial decision over Brandon Schaub, then knocked out Antonio Silva, who has increasingly looked like a complete shell of himself since being forced to stop taking TRT. I think Browne will be able to utilize his superior height and reach en route to winning either a convincing decision or he’ll crack Arlovski’s already weakened chin one last time and put “Pitbull” down for the count. Underdog Pick of the Night Donald Cerrone ($4500): This is a situation where you get to take advantage of a fighter injury. Cerrone’s super cheap $4500 price was due to his original opponent being Khabib Nurmagomedov, but a knee injury to “The Eagle” forced him out of the bout and now Cerrone will face John Makdessi instead. Makdessi is coming off a terrific UFC 186 performance four weeks ago, but that was against a fighter making their UFC debut. Cerrone is one of the most established fighters on the entire UFC lightweight roster and he’s in a position to take full advantage of the opponent switcheroo. You should too because he’s the best value fighter on the card. Fighter to Avoid Leo Kuntz ($4700): Don’t do it. Kuntz has had issues with being put on his back by superior wrestlers in the past and he’s facing the best wrestler he’s ever fought in Islam Makhachev. I’m not certain on how many points Makhachev will score, but I expect him to put Kuntz on his back and keep him there for the majority of this fight and while that may not be the most exciting thing Kountermove point-wise, it’s certainly better than being on the receiving end of it like I believe Kuntz will be. Take a pass on this guy.
