The mixed martial arts (MMA) fantasy website Kountermove is back with another exclusive game for MMAOddsBreaker.com readers. If you’re not familiar with how the site works, here’s a brief snippet from the site owners, themselves.
Kountermove brings the traditional fantasy format to MMA. Accumulation of points and a salary cap make fantasy MMA more intriguing than your basic “pick ’em” contest. With other industry pros on the site it is the place to be if you know your MMA. The game is fairly simple on its face, games are played over a single night during one event. Prior to the event, players get a total of $25,000 fantasy dollars to pick five fighters for your team. Each fighter is given a specific salary by Kountermove. Kountermove assigns a value for each fighter based on how we believe the fight will go. Points are scored if a fighter scores a finish, wins a round, lands significant strikes, knocks an opponent down, scores takedowns, secures dominant positions or attempts submissions. The more dominant your fighters’performance, the more points you’re going to score. If you score more points than your opponents, then you win the money.

If you’re interested in a few pointers on potential fighters to pick, I’ll be offering my analysis and potential picks to click. In case you have your doubts, I have a very nice track record of success with the website, having won plenty since its inception. Before I get to my picks, remember that to get the best value out of your team, you have to try to get an average of $5000 per fighter with your team of five fighters and your $25,000 salary cap. That means if you want to pick a big favorite from UFC Fight Night 66 like Frankie Edgar ($5800) you have to balance it out by picking some underdogs that you think will perform above and beyond. Sometimes it’s not worth it to pick the overwhelming favorite. Without further ado, here are some of the picks that stand out for me: Gegard Mousasi ($5300): I feel Mousasi has all the little advantages heading into his co-main event tilt opposite Costas Philippou. Mousasi is by far the more dynamic and diverse striker and he has a much better ground game with superior wrestling and some slick submissions. He’s also significantly younger than Philippou, despite having competed in more fights in his career. Unless Mousasi gets into a brawl or gets stuck in the clinch for the whole fight, this is his contest to lose and he should not just win but win impressively. Underdog Pick of the Night Yao Zhikui ($4100): I actually don’t think Zhikui will win his fight, but holy crap at $4100, he’s insanely underpriced. His fight against Nolan Ticman is a lot more competitive than people are giving it credit for. Zhikui is still a raw prospect, but he showed flashes in his UFC debut against Royston Wee at bantamweight (a fight I felt he should have won a decision) and Nolan Ticman had a lot of trouble dealing with the offensive pressure of Frankie Saenz in his UFC debut. I feel Zhikui will have a few bright spots and at his insanely cheap price, you can round out your teams with all the big favorites that you like the best. Fighter to Avoid Royston Wee ($4900): Hands down, Wee is one of the least skilled fighters on this entire card. He has some of the worst striking on the entire UFC roster and he’s just not a very good mixed martial artist. At this point in his career, the only thing he can really do is close the distance, drag fights to the ground and hang out in top position. That has helped him win two fights thus far in the UFC, but it sure hasn’t won him many fans and he definitely hasn’t been a big point scorer in Kountermove. Avoid him like the plague.
