UFC 186’s John Makdessi: ‘Canadian fighters are suffering’

MMAOddsBreaker’s Frank Trigg speaks with UFC 186 lightweight (now 160 pound catchweight fighter) John Makdessi about his upcoming main card fight tomorrow night (Saturday, April 25, 2015) against Shane Campbell at the Bell Centre in Montreal, Quebec, Canada.

The talented Tri-star product was concerned about missing out on fighting in his home country after losing his original opponent, and rightfully so considering some of the issues he sees with Canadian MMA at the moment:

“Right now, I believe MMA in Canada is not really as big. I find there’s talent in MMA but Canadian fighters are suffering. A lot of fighters are suffering because it’s not as high in demand as the Americans, they can fight more frequently. Canadian fighters, to always travel, there’s a lot of headaches behind the scenes with paperwork and taxes and all that stuff. There’s a lot of stress. Already MMA is a complex sport, just finding the right trainers, the right group of people to take care of you. Especially now as it’s becoming oversaturated, all quantity, no quality.  Me? I’m very old school. I’m a very raw fighters. I try to keep it simple and effective. I want to have longevity. I don’t wan to burn myself out and have a career career.”
