The Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) returned to Mexico City this past Saturday night (June 13th, 2015) for UFC 188: Velasquez vs Werdum. The action-packed evening produced a memorable night of scraps, and with the event now in our rear-view, let’s take a look at a few potential match-ups featuring some of the competitors from the evening… RE-MATCH EDITION Fabricio Werdum vs Junior dos Santos II “Cigano” knocked Werdum out in his promotional debut as a massive underdog and sent the PRIDE veteran packing from the promotion. After a successful run in Strikeforce and now with the UFC, Werdum has captured the UFC Heavyweight title with a win over Cain Velasquez and I think nothing would mean more than his first title defense to come against the man who viciously knocked him out, dos Santos. They are both different fighters at this point in their career and it would be very interesting to see how this rematch between the two Brazilian’s turns out. I think this is a fight that makes sense and would make for a great main event on any Pay Per View or FOX fight card. Cain Velasquez vs Ben Rothwell II Velasquez was submitted by Fabricio Werdum in the third round of their main event title fight this past weekend in Mexico City, ultimately losing his UFC Heavyweight title. A week prior, Rothwell submitted Matt Mitrione via gogo-choke in the first round of action, and I think this rare “winner vs loser” pairing makes sense between these two heavyweights. Rothwell badly wants a rematch with Velasquez, and now that he doesn’t need to continue his climb up the ladder to get it, I think he will be eager to take the fight. I think this would make for an excellent rematch in the UFC’s heavyweight division and I for one wouldn’t miss it. I could see it headlining a Fight Night card, but I would prefer to see it as the co-main event for September’s UFC 191 in Las Vegas. I feel like both heavyweights are currently looking for a return to action as soon as possible, and that card suits them best. Eddie Alvarez vs Gilbert Melendez II Alvarez defeated Melendez via split decision on the judges’ scorecards following three closely contested rounds of action. Following the bout, fans and media alike began calling for a five round rematch between the veteran lightweights, and all I could say about that is sign me up!
