Post-UFC 188: And the Bonus Goes to…

patrick williamsThe Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) returned to Mexico City this past Saturday night (June 13th, 2015) for UFC 188: Velasquez vs Werdum. After the event concluded, the promotion handed out four $50,000 checks for ‘Fight of the Night’ and ‘Performance of the Night’ honors. The betting lines to wager on such props were made available at Several Bookmakerss. Fabricio Werdum earned Performance of the Night honors for his third round guillotine choke submission of UFC Heavyweight Champion Cain Velasquez to become the promotion’s new Heavyweight King. It was a very impressive, come-from-behind win for Werdum, who seemed on his way towards a loss following the first round of action. However, he rallied back in the second, and wrapped things up in the third, becoming the UFC’s new Heavyweight Champion. Patrick Williams earned Performance of the Night honors for his standing guillotine choke submission of Alejandro Perez, which came at only 0:23 into the contest. Taking full advantage of his six inches in reach, Williams hurt the Mexican with a punch and immediately sinked in the choke, putting him into a deep sleep and forcing the referee to intervene and halt the contest. Other noteworthy performance(s): – Efrain Escudero defeated Drew Dober via standing guillotine choke at only 0:54 into the very first round of action. It was an impressive outing for The Ultimate Season Seven winner, who makes it two in a row inside the Octagon. Yair Rodriguez and Charles Rosa earned Fight of the Night honors for their three round war on the main card of UFC 188 in Mexico City. The two went back and forth in very entertaining exchanges, but it was ultimately Rodriguez who came out on top, taking home a split decision victory on the judges’ scorecards. Other noteworthy fights: – The aforementioned Velasquez vs Werdum bout. – Eddie Alvarez defeated Gilbert Melendez via split decision in a closely contested 15-minute co-main event scrap. It was a very tight, entertaining match-up that has fight fans asking for an immediate five round rematch.
