Boxing Preview: Updates and New Odds For the Weekend (May 9)

Austin TroutThe WBC Silver Super Welterweight title bout between Australia’s Anthony Mundine and Austin Trout has been called off due to Mundine suffering a perforated ear drum. The match was part of a tripleheader put together as part of the “Premier Boxing Champions” series that was set to air on CBS, so the match falling on fight week is a big disappointment. Mundine, who is 39 years old, experienced a career boost in his last outing when he beat previously undefeated Sergey Rabchenko, but he was an underdog coming into this fight and was said to also be battling elbow problems, so the postponement will hopefully see a healed Mundine. But for now, Austin Trout is facing TBA. The “PBC” fights on CBS still feature undefeated Omar Figueroa Jr facing the challenge of former world champion Ricky Burns of England. Burns is coming in a considerable underdog paying (+700), while Figueroa is paying back (-1100). The WBA World Bantamweight title bout between champion Jamie McDonnell (25-2-1) and Japan’s Tomoki Kameda (31-0) sees Kameda come in as the favorite at (-250), while McDonnell comes back at (+210). The live event features 13 fights in all and is going down at the State Farm Arena in Hidalgo, Texas. And Several Bookmakers has added lines in the last 24 hours for boxing at the Prudential Center in New Jersey that is promoted by Bob Arum of Top Rank and will air on TruTV in the United States. Right now, only the Light Heavyweight match between undefeated local prospect Sean Monaghan (23-0) and Brazilian Cleiton Conceicao (20-6-2) has odds. The bout is scheduled for 10 rounds, and the line sees Monaghan a massive (-5000) favorite over Conceicao, who is returning at (+2000). Monaghan is being groomed correctly here, and Conceicao represents a veteran who should provide Monaghan with some ring-time. The undercard features several undefeated prospects such as “Hammer Hands” Julian Rodriguez and Baltimore’s Mike Reed in similar matches that they are expected to win. The main event of the card features Glen Tapia (23-1) facing France’s Michel Soro in a bout with two national belts on the line. Tapia already owns the NABO title and he is looking to add the vacant USBA title in this one as well. The books have not posted a line for this fight yet, but Tapia is a local favorite who still bears the label of prospect. In his lone loss, he went out on his shield against James Kirkland, getting stopped in the 6th round of a back and forth battle back in December of 2013. Since then Tapia has gone (3-0), adding the NABO title in his last outing this past March 7th with a win over Daniel Dawson (40-4-1) in Macau, China. For his part, Soro’s lone loss came back in 2012 in a failed bid for the WBO World title, but he has gone a strong (7-0-1) since then to earn the title shot. Though the books have not posted a line for this fight yet, it is expected to pop up at the sport books in the next 24 hours.
