MMA Odds and Ends for Friday: Fabricio Werdum vs Alexander Volkov headlines UFC London

Werdum vs Volkov at UFC Fight Night 127

A heavyweight bout between former champion Fabricio Werdum and surging contender Alexander Volkov was announced for UFC Fight Night 127 in London yesterday via UFC Europe’s Twitter. The two will throw down on March 17th. Werdum (23-7-1) has won two consecutive bouts, most recently earning a decision over fellow contender Marcin Tybura this past November. Volkov (29-6) has won five straight bouts including a 3-0 run in the UFC, most recently earning a TKO victory over Stefan Struve this past September.

Look for Werdum to open as a favorite to his more well-rounded skill-set, although Volkov could be a live dog. Here’s an updated look at the fight card:

265 lbs.: Fabrício Werdum vs. Alexander Volkov
170 lbs.: Leon Edwards vs. Peter Sobotta
205 lbs.: Paul Craig vs. Magomed Ankalaev
155 lbs.: Alex Reyes vs. Nasrat Haqparast
205 lbs.: Jimi Manuwa vs. Jan Błachowicz
155 lbs.: Rustam Khabilov vs. Kajan Johnson
170 lbs.: Elizeu Zaleski dos Santos vs. Jack Marshman
170 lbs.: Danny Roberts vs. Oliver Enkamp
145 lbs.: Danny Henry vs. Hakeem Dawodu

Pettis vs Chiesa at UFC 223

A lightweight contest between Anthony Pettis and Michael Chiesa has been made official for UFC 223 on via UFC’s Twitter account yesterday. Pettis (20-7) has lost five of his last seven bouts, most recently losing to Dustin Poirier in November. Chiesa (14-3) had his three-fight winning streak snapped by Kevin Lee last June.

Pettis has the name recognition, but Chiesa has been fighting better. I think the betting line will be close on this one with a slight lean towards Pettis due to his popularity.
