With the announcement recently that UFC Middleweight Champion Robert Whittaker is out of the UFC 221 main event, UFC instead booked Luke Rockhold against Yoel Romero for the interim 185-pound title. The revamped bout will take place February 10, 2018 in Perth, Australia.
Rockhold (16-3), the former champion, was shockingly knocked out by Michael Bisping in one of 2016’s biggest upsets. He returned to the Octagon this past September, scoring a second round stoppage victory over David Branch to get back in the title mix.
Romero (12-2), a former Olympic medal-winning wrestler, impressively began his UFC career with eight straight victories in the middleweight division. He most recently lost a competitive decision to Whittaker for the interim middleweight title this past July and has not fought since.
